5 - How to do a Search with the Cataloguer using < and >

By R. Lopes

Next Tutorial (Search with <> and =)

I'll use the Motorcars catalogue done by John (Cat1 and Cat4). A word of note was the easy way in which it transferred and opened in my software - truly exportable. John has stored his images in removable media (CD-Rom Discs) and used One Disc for each make of Motorcar. So Disc No. 1 contains images of the 'Alfa Romeo' make only. 'Audi' is stored in Disc No. 2, and so on.

Looking at the data fields, I pick the Disc No. field to use in my tutorial contribution. I will be using the symbols "<" (Less) and ">" (More) in my searches.

Searches can be done by accessing the 'find pictures' icon (see left graphic) or

by using the 'Edit-Find Pictures' command from the toolbar droplist.

On clicking either of these options, we see the 'search' screen appear in place of the tree/directory in the same area. Note the cursor arrow is pointing to one of the vertical dividers. This software is absolutely 'designable' and allows one to 'grab' (click the vertical bar and hold the click, then drag the bar to the right to open it more. The same applies to the horizontal divider bar not shown in the picture).

In the search screen I pick 'Any Category' from the droplist to make it search through the whole catalogue (I could have narrowed down the search using any of the choices in the droplist obviously)

There are no Sub-Categories in John's Motorcars Catalogue or else they would be displayed in the Sub-Category droplist, so the software knows to ignore this parameter.

I then click the checkbox marked 'Also use this criteria' so the next steps are included in the search (note that one can obviously search simply with the two parameters above before getting to this stage, if applicable).

From the first droplist, I pick the Disc No. option as what I want is to search within this criteria for my files.

on the next droplist I pick the criteria 'more' or ">".

Then I enter the number 10 in the text field in front as the value. This tells me that I will be searching for images contained in my disc no. 11 (more than 10) and above.

I click the 'Find' button

and in the images area of the catalogue all images contained in the catalogue that are being stored in Discs labeled 10 and above, (as per how John categorized them), appear. If I click any of the images I will be able to see their data details in the data area and see which of the Disc No. (11 and above) they belong to. Images, depending on their size and resolution may take the relative time to load much like with any other graphics software.

In order to clearly show the above mentioned and to also test the next criteria symbol ("<"), the 'less than' symbol, I will narrow down my search from this point.

I click the checkbox 'Also use this criteria' so I can narrow my search further

From the first droplist I again pick 'Disc No.'

from the criteria droplist I pick the "less" symbol

And enter a value of 12. This means I will now be bringing up the images stored in John's Disc number 11 (more than 10 and less than 12).

It brings me one image only because John's disc no. 11 contains images for the "Maserati" make of Motocar and he only has one picture loaded there.

Clicking the 'Reset' button resets the search to nil and allows you to start another search. 'Cancel' cancels ongoing search and defaults to the catalogue if you are in the category or subcategory view.
